About Musica Mundi
Musica Mundi has established itself as a leading Early Music ensemble
in the West Country; it uses instruments and performing styles based on
those of the Baroque and earlier periods, in order to communicate this
exciting music to audiences as vividly as possible.
The core of the group is a chamber ensemble of voice, cello and
harpsichord. For larger-scale concerts, however, the group can expand
to include full strings and/or wind instruments.
The group has received coaching and advice from some of the foremost
authorities in the field, including David Roblou and Philip Pickett,
with whom it took part in a demonstration lecture at the Guildhall
School of Music. It has performed throughout the country, including a
well-received appearance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The group
has been invited regularly by the Holland Early Music Festival to give
concerts in the Festival Fringe in Utrecht. Other engagements have
included recitals for the National Trust, Exeter, Warwick and Bristol
Universities, the Early Music Centre in London, and the St. George’s
Music Trust at St. George’s, Brandon Hill, Bristol.
In addition to the Baroque repertoire, members of the group are
interested in contemporary writing for early instruments, and have
commissioned and given first performances of new music, including a
recent performance of a new work at the Early Music Centre.
Musica Mundi takes considerable care over the planning of its
programmes, aiming at a variety of vocal and instrumental music, while
giving each programme a satisfying overall shape. Programmes can be
tailored to the interests of a particular audience if desired.
Lecture-recitals can also be arranged. Members of the group have
considerable professional lecturing experience, and the recital can, if
desired, be interwoven with description and discussion of the
instruments and the music.
